Organiser: Adrenalin North Yorkshire
Event: Adrenalin Shock Obstacle Course Race
Distance: 10K
Status: Booked
Apparently, waiting until May to start getting muddy again in 2027 was simply too sensible.
So I’ve found something rather interesting in North Yorkshire.
Adrenalin Shock.
An obstacle course race involving rivers, marshes, woodland, steep ground, lots of mud and the legendary Krypton Factor assault course.
And I thought this sounded like an excellent way to start the OCR season!
The washing machine may have a different opinion.
The Event
Adrenalin Shock takes place on the Aske Estate near Richmond, North Yorkshire, and offers two courses:
- 5K: At least 38 obstacles.
- 10K: At least 53 obstacles, with the longer race also serving as a qualifier for the European and World OCR Championships.
But this isn’t simply a running event with the occasional obstacle thrown in.
The course includes a 900-metre river section, woodland trails, marshes, bogs, rough terrain and plenty of climbing, swinging, crawling and balancing.
And then comes the grand finale.
Around 850 metres of deep mud, water and more than 24 obstacles, incorporating the famous Krypton Factor assault course.
Yes. That Krypton Factor.
I remember television programmes where contestants tackled assault courses like this.
Now, apparently, I’ve decided it would be a good idea to have a go myself.
What could possibly go wrong? 😅
Why Adrenalin Shock?
Following my first season of obstacle course racing in 2026, I’ve become increasingly interested in events that offer something a little different.
Adrenalin Shock certainly appears to qualify.
The number and concentration of obstacles make this a very different prospect from simply covering another 10 kilometres.
There will be plenty of opportunities to test grip strength, upper-body strength, coordination and the ability to keep going when everything is wet, muddy and increasingly uncomfortable.
All areas where I still have plenty to learn.
And with World’s Toughest Mudder approaching in June, every opportunity to encounter unfamiliar obstacles and difficult conditions is valuable.
It’s another chance to discover what works, identify weaknesses and hopefully make a few improvements.
The Challenge
My approach will be straightforward.
Enjoy the event, attempt the obstacles, learn from the experience and finish with a better understanding of what I need to work on.
I’m particularly interested in the Krypton Factor course itself. With so many obstacles concentrated towards the finish, it’ll be interesting to see how my arms, shoulders and grip cope after the rest of the course.
Of course, there’s also the small matter of the river, the bogs and an April morning in North Yorkshire.
After my experiences at Manchester, I’m hoping to arrive rather better prepared for the cold!
Another Step Towards WTM
Adrenalin Shock adds another experience to an increasingly ambitious 2027 programme.
The main objective remains World’s Toughest Mudder, but the journey towards it is about far more than building endurance.
I want to experience different obstacle designs, improve my technique, learn to manage difficult terrain and become more confident when faced with something unfamiliar.
And if the opportunity also involves getting gloriously muddy in beautiful Yorkshire countryside, that’s hardly a disadvantage.
Although I suspect the washing machine is already preparing a formal complaint.
Next stop: Adrenalin Shock, Richmond.
Endure. Overcome. Make It Count.
And yes, I’ve already wondered about the finisher shiny. 🎖️✨🦔💛
