This is where the preparation starts to get serious.
Tough Mudder London West is more than another weekend of mud and obstacles. For Tough Smudge, it will be the first attempt at a Tough Mudder Infinity, followed the very next day by both the 15K and 5K.
Three different formats. Two days. One weekend.
And a very deliberate step towards World’s Toughest Mudder.
London West takes place at Culden Faw Estate near Henley-on-Thames, 1,000 acres of private estate packed with dense woodland, steep hills, water-filled ditches and some of the most technical terrain on Tough Mudder’s 2027 UK calendar.
Saturday: Infinity
Saturday is the big one.
Tough Mudder Infinity is an eight-hour endurance event, replacing the normal fixed-distance finish line with repeated laps of the course. The format uses 5K and 15K laps, with the objective of accumulating as much distance as your legs, body and mind will allow during the eight hours.
But my objective at London West isn’t to chase a headline distance.
There are additional achievements available for reaching the bigger Infinity mileage milestones, but that’s not what this first attempt is about.
The target is to get through my first Infinity.
I want eight hours of experience.
Time on my feet. Repeated obstacles. Eating and drinking while still competing. Managing pace. Understanding what happens as grip strength disappears, legs become tired and the easy decisions at the beginning of the day become considerably harder several hours later.
Most importantly, I want to learn.
This is preparation rather than a test of how far I can push the numbers. If there is a sensible choice between adding another unnecessary lap and coming out of Saturday in a condition that lets me achieve the rest of the weekend, the bigger picture wins.
Because Sunday matters too.
Sunday: 15K + 5K
After whatever Saturday throws at me, the plan is to return to the start line on Sunday and complete both the Tough Mudder 15K and 5K.
The 15K brings 20+ obstacles, followed by another 5K and 12+ obstacles.
On fresh legs, that’s already a decent day’s work.
After an eight-hour Infinity the day before, it becomes something much more useful.
The challenge will start before Sunday’s first obstacle. How well have I recovered overnight? Can I refuel properly? How does my body react when I ask it to start again? What happens to grip, climbing ability and judgement when the fatigue I’m carrying wasn’t accumulated that morning, but the day before?
That’s exactly the experience I’m looking for.
World’s Toughest Mudder isn’t going to be solved by being able to run one good lap. The bigger challenge is continuing to function as the hours accumulate.
London West provides my first opportunity to explore that properly.
It also arrives only weeks before World’s Toughest Mudder itself, making this one of the most important rehearsal weekends in the entire Tough Smudge programme.
There will be other opportunities to chase bigger Infinity distances.
London West is about learning how to endure.
Saturday: eight hours of Infinity.
Sunday: 15K and 5K.
Then find out what is left.
