Three formats. Two days. One very muddy target.

The Tough Mudder Trifecta is achieved by completing a 5K, a 15K and an Infinity during the same season.

Naturally, Tough Smudge has decided to try to complete all three in one weekend.

The first attempt will be at Tough Mudder London West, 8–9 May 2027, at Culden Faw Estate.

And the ambition has changed rather a lot since I first started planning it.

Manchester changed the expectations

When I originally looked at my first Infinity, the idea of completing the initial courses and then returning for a 15K and 5K on Sunday seemed like a sufficiently ridiculous challenge.

Then Manchester happened.

In October 2026, I completed six Tough Mudder runs over one weekend: three 15Ks and three 5Ks.

60 kilometres in two days.

It wasn’t easy. The weather was miserable, my hands were cold, and by the end I was contemplating hibernation.

But I finished all six.

And that rather changes how I look at London West.

Saturday: My first Infinity

Infinity is a different challenge altogether.

Eight hours in which to keep accumulating laps, managing obstacles, hills, nutrition, fatigue and the temptation to stop.

The first objective is straightforward: complete my first Infinity and learn as much as possible.

But I don’t want to arrive without a more ambitious distance in mind.

I’m now thinking 40 kilometres would be a very satisfying target.

That would mean accumulating substantially more distance than my original plan, while testing my ability to keep moving through a longer, continuous endurance challenge.

And if everything is going exceptionally well?

Perhaps 50 kilometres might be within reach.

That’s a stretch ambition, not a promise. There is a big difference between being determined and being sensible, and apparently I need to learn how to do both.

Especially with World’s Toughest Mudder approaching.

Sunday: Go again

After Saturday’s Infinity, Sunday brings another challenge.

A 15K in the morning, followed by a 5K in the afternoon.

Another 20 kilometres on legs that may have some fairly strong opinions about the whole idea.

If Saturday reaches 40K, that would make 60 kilometres for the weekend, matching Manchester’s distance but in a very different format.

If I somehow reach 50K on Saturday and complete Sunday’s runs, the weekend could total 70 kilometres.

But completing the Trifecta and gaining valuable endurance experience are the real objectives.

Building towards World’s Toughest Mudder

London West isn’t an isolated challenge. It’s the opening Tough Mudder weekend of my 2027 season and an important step towards World’s Toughest Mudder at Belvoir Castle in June.

Saturday will teach me how to manage repeated laps.

Saturday evening will teach me how well I recover.

Sunday will test whether I can get up and do it all again.

And all of that matters when the ultimate goal is to keep going for 24 hours.

Manchester proved that I can achieve more than I originally expected.

London West is an opportunity to discover what comes next.

Three formats. Two days. One Trifecta.

And, potentially, rather a lot more mud than originally planned.

Endure. Overcome. Make It Count. 🦔💛

Grasmere Wild Trail Runs

Another trip to the Lake District, but this time the running shoes are coming with me.

The Grasmere Wild Trail Runs have been on my radar as exactly the sort of event that fits into the Tough Smudge journey. It isn't an obstacle race and it isn't about chasing a flat-road 10K time. This is about getting more experience running properly off-road, dealing with hills, changing surfaces and the sort of terrain that makes ten kilometres feel very different from ten kilometres on tarmac.

Tough Mudder: London West 2027

The first major endurance rehearsal. Tough Smudge heads to London West for an eight-hour Infinity on Saturday, before returning on Sunday for both the 15K and 5K. The Infinity target isn't a distance award. It's to complete the experience, learn from it and discover how much is left when it's time to go again.

Tough Mudder: London South 2026

The Tough Smudge journey heads to Holmbush Estate for Tough Mudder London South 2026. Another 15K, another 20+ obstacles and another chance to build experience, endurance and resilience on the road to World's Toughest Mudder 2027.
