Back to where it all began

A year after my first Tough Mudder, it’s back to Yorkshire.

Back to Broughton Hall.

Back to the course where this particular piece of madness started.

Except this time, 15K isn’t the target.

Tough Mudder Yorkshire returns to the Broughton Hall Estate near Skipton on 24 and 25 July 2027, bringing Infinity, 15K and 5K formats to a course renowned for mud, steep climbs, woodland tracks and the kind of uneven terrain that makes every kilometre harder than the number suggests.

And I’m planning to take on all three.

Saturday: Infinity 50K

By Yorkshire, Infinity shouldn’t be unfamiliar anymore.

London West is about completing the first one and learning.

Scotland is about applying those lessons and chasing 30K.

Yorkshire is the next step.

50 kilometres.

That’s the target for Saturday.

Infinity provides eight hours to keep accumulating laps, starting with the main course before using additional 15K and 5K laps to build distance.

At 50K, there won’t be much room for wasted time.

Pacing will matter. Pit stops will matter. Nutrition will matter. Feet will matter. Grip strength will matter.

And the ability to make myself leave the relative comfort of the pit and start another lap when I’ve already done more than enough for one day will definitely matter.

By then, World’s Toughest Mudder should also have provided the biggest endurance lesson of all.

Whatever happens there will change what I know about myself, my preparation and how I cope when an event moves beyond ordinary tiredness.

Yorkshire will be the first opportunity to put those lessons back into an eight-hour format.

This isn’t simply about surviving an Infinity anymore.

It’s about seeing whether I can reach 50K.

Sunday: 15K + 5K

Then comes the slightly ridiculous part.

Get some food. Get some sleep. Wake up on Sunday. And go back.

The plan is to complete the 15K and 5K, adding another 20 kilometres of Tough Mudder and another substantial collection of obstacles to whatever Saturday has already taken out of me.

Infinity. 15K. 5K. All in one weekend.

It will be another complete Tough Mudder Trifecta combination during 2027 and, assuming everything leading into Yorkshire has gone to plan, another significant endurance weekend in its own right.

But the real challenge isn’t collecting three different formats.

It’s the sequencing.

There is a huge difference between completing a 15K on fresh legs and standing on its start line the morning after trying to cover 50 kilometres through Broughton’s hills and mud.

Then, when the 15K finish line finally arrives, choosing not to stop.

Because there is still a 5K to do.

Back where it started

There is something particularly fitting about attempting this one in Yorkshire. In July 2026, Broughton Hall was my first Tough Mudder. Back then, finishing the 15K was the challenge. Twelve months later, the proposed weekend is:

  • 50K Infinity on Saturday.
  • 15K on Sunday.
  • 5K on Sunday.

Potentially 70 kilometres of Tough Mudder in a single weekend.

Same place. Same hills. Probably the same ridiculous amount of mud. Very different expectations.

And perhaps the clearest demonstration yet of just how far this journey has travelled.

Grasmere Wild Trail Runs

Another trip to the Lake District, but this time the running shoes are coming with me.

The Grasmere Wild Trail Runs have been on my radar as exactly the sort of event that fits into the Tough Smudge journey. It isn't an obstacle race and it isn't about chasing a flat-road 10K time. This is about getting more experience running properly off-road, dealing with hills, changing surfaces and the sort of terrain that makes ten kilometres feel very different from ten kilometres on tarmac.

Tough Mudder: London West 2027

The first major endurance rehearsal. Tough Smudge heads to London West for an eight-hour Infinity on Saturday, before returning on Sunday for both the 15K and 5K. The Infinity target isn't a distance award. It's to complete the experience, learn from it and discover how much is left when it's time to go again.

Tough Mudder: London South 2026

The Tough Smudge journey heads to Holmbush Estate for Tough Mudder London South 2026. Another 15K, another 20+ obstacles and another chance to build experience, endurance and resilience on the road to World's Toughest Mudder 2027.
