2027 Scotland Spartan Event Weekend

The 2027 Scotland Spartan Event Weekend will be my first experience of Spartan racing and adds another dimension to an already substantial weekend of obstacle course racing at Hopetoun Estate.

Spartan takes over the venue on Sunday following Tough Mudder Scotland on the Saturday. As I will already be in Scotland to tackle Tough Mudder Infinity, it seemed the perfect opportunity to experience a different style of obstacle course racing and make the most of the journey north.

Rather than dipping my toe in with a single race, I’ve booked two.

I’ll start Sunday morning with the Spartan Super 10K, before returning to the course later in the day for the Spartan Sprint 5K.

Both races are entered in the Open category. This is Spartan’s non-competitive category, allowing participants to tackle the course at their own pace rather than competing for Elite or Age Group rankings. The obstacles and penalties remain part of the challenge, but for me the objective is completing the courses, experiencing Spartan and, most importantly, enjoying it.

Spartan Super 10K

The first challenge of Sunday will be the Super, combining approximately 10 kilometres of running with 25 obstacles.

The Super sits between Spartan’s shorter Sprint and longer Beast formats and should provide a good introduction to what distinguishes Spartan from the Tough Mudder events that have formed the majority of my obstacle racing so far.

Hopetoun Estate is described as a fast, flowing Spartan course with a mixture of elevation changes and Scottish countryside. Exactly how fast it feels may depend on what Saturday’s Tough Mudder Infinity has left in my legs.

This isn’t about chasing a time or position. The aim is to tackle the obstacles properly, keep moving and discover a different approach to OCR.

Distance: 10 km
Obstacles: 25
Category: Open
Run: Sunday morning

Spartan Sprint 5K

After completing the Super, I’ll return later on Sunday for the Spartan Sprint.

At 5 kilometres with 20 obstacles, the Sprint is Spartan’s shortest traditional race format. On its own it might be the easier of the weekend’s challenges, but context changes things considerably.

By the time I reach this start line, the weekend should already include Tough Mudder Infinity on Saturday and the Spartan Super on Sunday morning.

The Sprint therefore becomes less about distance and more about what is left in the tank.

It also means my first Spartan event will give me experience of two different race formats in a single day, providing a much better opportunity to understand how Spartan compares with Tough Mudder and whether Spartan has a place in future Tough Smudge plans.

Whatever condition I’m in by the afternoon, the objective is straightforward: get back onto the course, tackle another 20 obstacles and reach the final finish line of a very busy weekend.

A Different Kind of OCR Weekend

Spartan and Tough Mudder may both involve mud, running and obstacles, but they have developed different identities and approaches to obstacle course racing.

That makes Scotland particularly interesting.

Saturday is about endurance and seeing how far I can go during Tough Mudder Infinity. Sunday gives me the opportunity to switch formats completely and experience Spartan for the first time, initially over 10K and then again over 5K.

Across the two days, that means one Tough Mudder Infinity and two Spartan races at the same venue.

It should make the trip to Scotland worthwhile.
