Follow the mud, miles and madness.
Tough Smudge is about more than race day.
It is the training before the start line, the mud, the obstacles, the bad weather, the early mornings, the mistakes, the small wins, the difficult miles and the occasional moment where everything seems to come together.
The website is the home of the full Tough Smudge story, but social media is where much of the day-to-day journey happens.
You can follow Tough Smudge across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X for race weekends, training updates, videos, photographs, fundraising progress, behind-the-scenes content and the continuing road towards bigger endurance challenges.

Bring it! At Born Survivor Lancashire tomorrow, Elite Squadron….not bothered about the prizes, or the leaderboard. Looking for OCR practice and a good run.
Went Elite for the chance of a second run FOC ..I'm a Yorkshireman after all.
If I can get round within the 90min timing window added bonus.
Need a couple more pairs of clogs ahead of WTM next June so interested to see INOV8 and the possibility of borrowing a pair 🤞

The first Tough Smudge training programme starts with the core. Cycle 1 is a four-week programme built around three short workouts covering bracing and stability, loaded functional movement, and OCR-specific instability.

YouTube
The longer story
YouTube is where the Tough Smudge journey gets a little more room to breathe.
As the project develops, this will become the home of longer-form videos covering training, Tough Mudder weekends, endurance challenges, equipment, preparation and the road towards World’s Toughest Mudder.
Expect less polished perfection and more of what actually happens when preparing for increasingly ambitious challenges.
That might include a good training session, a disastrous one, a race that goes exactly to plan or a weekend where nothing does.
Future video series will include race weekend films, training updates, challenge preparation and the developing Road to World’s Toughest Mudder.
Updates, community and fundraising
Facebook is where many of the more complete day-to-day Tough Smudge updates will appear.
That includes upcoming events, race weekend reports, fundraising news, photographs, new videos and updates on the wider Tough Smudge journey.
It is also an important part of the community side of the project.
Tough Smudge is ultimately about taking on difficult challenges, seeing what is possible and trying to make those challenges count for something beyond simply collecting another medal.
A major part of that is continuing to support and raise awareness for Prostate Cancer UK.
The visual diary
Instagram is the quickest way to see what Tough Smudge looks like between the bigger stories.
Expect mud, medals, trails, race photographs, training sessions, kit, Reels, course moments and the occasional picture where I look considerably more comfortable than I actually felt.
It is also where I will share some of the smaller moments that might never become a full article or video.
The miles between the milestones matter too.
X
Quick updates from the journey
X is for the shorter stuff.
- Training completed.
- Race morning.
- A particularly unpleasant hill.
- A surprisingly good run.
- Something I have learned.
- Something that went wrong.
- Or occasionally just confirmation that another long session has been completed and I still appear to be functioning.
It is the quickest-running commentary on the Tough Smudge journey.
More than social media
Tough Smudge is not intended to become a project that exists only on social platforms.
The website remains the main home of the journey.
This is where you will find the complete record of challenges, upcoming events, training, race experiences, videos, fundraising and the longer story behind what I am trying to achieve.
Social media provides the snapshots.
Tough Smudge tells the whole story.
Follow the journey
There is a lot planned.
More Tough Mudders.
Longer distances.
More training.
More mistakes to learn from.
More stories to tell.
And ultimately the attempt to take everything learned along the way into World’s Toughest Mudder.
If you would like to follow the journey, choose whichever platform works best for you.
Or simply keep coming back here.
Making it count
Tough Smudge is also being used to support Prostate Cancer UK.
Fundraising for the charity is completely separate from the costs of running Tough Smudge. Donations made through the fundraising page go to Prostate Cancer UK and are not used to fund event entries, travel, equipment or the website.
If you would like to support the fundraising side of the journey, you can do so through the dedicated donation page.
If you would instead like to support Tough Smudge itself, including future events, content and the wider project, you can find more information on the Support and Sponsorship pages.
Stay muddy
However you choose to follow, thank you for being part of the journey.
There is still a very long way to go.
Which is rather the point.
