Behind the Lens: Andrew Smith

If you’ve arrived here by following a Photo: Andrew Smith credit somewhere on Tough Smudge, the image you were looking at was photographed by me.

Tough Smudge is built around documenting my own journey through obstacle course racing, running, endurance challenges and everything that happens between the start line and the finish.

Where possible, I want the photography on the site to be part of that story too.

Tough Smudge Photography

Photographs credited to Andrew Smith are photographs I have taken myself.

That might include event weekends, training, equipment, travel, medals, kit, locations, preparation, recovery or some of the slightly less glamorous moments that come with spending an increasing amount of time covered in mud.

The intention is simple: wherever an image appears on Tough Smudge, its origin should be clear.

If I took it, it is credited to me.

If somebody else created it, their appropriate credit or licence should be shown instead.

Why Credit My Own Photos?

It might seem unnecessary to credit photographs on my own website, but Tough Smudge now follows a simple principle:

Every image should have a known provenance.

Adding a credit to my own photography makes that system consistent and removes any ambiguity about where an image came from.

It also means that when an image is reused elsewhere on Tough Smudge, the credit travels with it through the site’s image-caption system.

Copyright and Reuse

Unless stated otherwise, photographs credited to Andrew Smith are my original photographs and remain copyright © Andrew Smith.

They should not be copied, republished, distributed or used elsewhere without permission. (Prostrate Cancer UK, Tough Mudder / Spartan / Born Survivor / Nuclear Races, and organisers / companies behind any event I have taken part in and detailed on this site have permission to use my photos provided no alteration is made and a links to www.Tough-Smudge.uk and my social channels are made.)

If you would like to use one of my photographs, please get in touch first. I’m generally happy to consider reasonable requests, particularly where the use relates to obstacle course racing, endurance events, charity or the Tough Smudge story.

Event Branding

Some photographs may naturally include event signage, medals, clothing, obstacles, venues, products or other third-party branding.

The photograph itself may be mine, but any trade marks, logos, designs or other intellectual property appearing within it remain the property of their respective owners.

Tough Smudge is an independent personal project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the organisations whose events, products or services may appear in my photography.

Part of the Story

Tough Smudge isn’t intended to be a polished catalogue of perfect race photographs.

Sometimes the best image is muddy, badly timed, taken from the wrong angle or captured five minutes after wondering why I thought entering the event was a sensible idea in the first place.

That’s rather the point.

The photographs are part of the record of the journey.

Dirt. Distance. People. Stories.

And, occasionally, a camera pointed in approximately the right direction.

Keep getting muddy. 🦔💛
